450 New Police Coming to DC Neighborhoods

– The DC Council has approved 350 new additional police officers for District neighborhoods. Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One) strongly supports this expansion of the police force.
 
During budget discussions in May, Councilmember Graham successfully led the effort for funding 100 new neighborhood police officers. Yesterday’s Council action means a total of 450 new officers will be hired, trained and headed for the streets.
 

DMV To Dismiss Old, Handwritten Tickets

Washington, DC - Drivers will no longer be held liable for handwritten parking tickets that don’t appear in the District’s online payment system within two weeks.
 
Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One) welcomes this policy change. He has received numerous complaints from his constituents and long decried the unfairness of penalizing citizens when government performs inadequately.
 

Reward Doubled in Shipe Murder Case

Washington, DC - The reward for information in the unsolved murder case of Gregory Shipe has grown to $50,000.
 
Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One) requested the increase after a May vigil and rally in Mount Pleasant. Metropolitan Police Chief Charles Ramsey raised the reward and issued new posters for the area around the crime scene in response to Councilmember Graham’s request.
 

Mayor Signs Rent Control Bill

Washington, DC – Mayor Anthony Williams has signed a sweeping rent control reform bill into law.
 
The bill, authored by Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One), is the most significant change to the District’s rent control laws in more than 20 years. It applies to an estimated 100,000 apartments in the city.
 
 

Sweeping New Rent Control Reform Sent to Mayor

Washington, DC – A stronger, simpler rent control law is on its way to Mayor Williams for his signature.
 
A unanimous DC Council today gave final approval to a rent control reform bill, authored by Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One). This is the most significant change to the District’s rent control laws in more than 20 years. This law applies to an estimated 100,000 apartments in the city.
