Graham Calls for DDOT Review of Dangerous Alley
Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One) is calling for a full investigation into an accident yesterday in which four people were struck and injured by a car in an alley near 14th Street in Northwest Washington late Wednesday morning.
“This tragic accident is another reminder of the dangers of this long troubled, heavily used alley between CentroNia and Columbia Heights Village,” said Graham.
In April of this year, Mr. Stanley W. Huff Jr. was crushed by a garbage truck while backing out of the same alley.
“We are fortunate the injuries in yesterday’s tragic accident, to my knowledge, were not more serious,” said Graham.
Upon hearing of news of this accident, Graham immediately reached out to Director of Transportation Terry Bellamy.
“While the full investigation results are not as yet known, there are repeated reports on just how dangerous this alley is. I think it makes sense for DDOT to immediately conduct a transportation audit and investigate possible alternative ways to manage automobile and pedestrian traffic in this alley,” wrote Graham.
Once the audit is complete, Councilmember Graham will join with DDOT to convene a meeting of all interested to review the audit and possible changes in the traffic pattern.
