WASHINGTON, D.C.: Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One) on Monday night called on the Metropolitan Police for a sustained police effort in Adams Morgan on weekend nights.
Councilmember Graham met with 50 residents and Metropolitan Police Assistant Chief Diane Groomes Monday night to discuss strategies to combat violence in the neighborhood. Councilmember Graham asked for at least 20 patrol officers to in and around the 18th Street business corridor on Friday and Saturday nights.
“The fact of the matters is until we marshal real muscle in a sustained way weekend after weekend, we can expect more of the same,” Mr. Graham said. “This neighborhood must demand the type of police presence that we would expect to find in any entertainment area where thousands of people are coming in every single weekend.”
The request comes in the wake of a shooting on the corner of 18th Street and Columbia Road early Sunday morning and other recent crimes.
