Touring U Street Visitor Center: Mid City Mixer

My good friend Linda Donavan Harper, executive director of CulturalTourism DC sent this over to me. Here we are at the U Street Neighborhood Visitor Center early last month. It's a fabulous place for groups to have parties and receptions and for residents and visitors to learn about Black Broadway and the grand history of our U Street and LeDroit Neighborhoods.

This was my first visit to the Visitors Center, and I want to thank Cultural Tourism DC, Ben's Chili Bowl and Next Door and the Mid City Merchant's Assocaition for making this possible.

Latest from DDOT on Col Hts Construction End

Everyone has been suffering in and around Col Hts with the ongoing construction.

Here is the latest STATEMENT just received from DC DEPT OF TRANSPORTATION:

“This week DDOT is working furiously to complete the road construction in Columbia Heights. Their goal is to pave and completely reopen 14th Street, between Irving and Newton, by Friday at the latest. The project won’t be 100% done, but the concrete barriers and orange cones will be gone and the traffic flow should improve dramatically just in time for the holiday weekend.

“After the holidays, the contractor will return to complete the concrete pavement placement on the SW corner of 14th and Park, put a final top coat of asphalt down and complete the final striping, as well as complete other final sidewalk repair and ornamental items next week. DDOT is also working with Pepco to prioritize the service connections for new traffic signals and streetlights.

“The biggest obstacle to completing this project on time has been the coordination with the utility companies. DDOT’s road work has been delayed throughout the last several months by Pepco, and just this week work was delayed again because WASA was unable to repair a leaking valve at the intersection of Monroe and 14th Street.”

With IHOP on the Way, DCUSA has 1000 retail jobs

Dear Friends, IHOP is about to open in Columbia Heights at the DCUSA building….bringing another 100 jobs to this center. Thus the total number of DCUSA retail jobs created is almost 1000. And that does not include the thousands of other jobs that are to be found throughout Columbia Heights today.

What a difference between today, and the vacant lots with chain link fences that used to mark this area!

Soon, the road construction will be over, and we will all better enjoy this splendid new community.

Michelle Obama Stresses Nutrition and Excersise at Bell H.S.

Our First Lady Michelle Obama kicked off her "Let's Move" campaign against childhood obesity.

Michelle is a beautiful special lady, just look at our pics. She has a special message for our youth: "Get up, Get out and Get physical."  She also talked about eating healthier fresh vegetables, fruits and lean meats rather than processed starch and sugary snacks, and please leave the fastfood at the store.

But more importantly, it's not just the children who need to get the message, parents need to get involved and help their youngsters make better eating choices and make sure they are involved in physical activity or organized sports.

Ward One certainly has a wealth of opportunities at Banneker, Kalorama, Parkview, Garrison Recreation Center in addition to our schools.

Bests,

Jim Graham
