Welcome

Friends,

Welcome to my Web site!

I am proud to represent Ward One, the most diverse ward in the District of Columbia.

Here you will find information on city services and the policies I've pursued in my more than 10 years of service to the people of our ward. We also have hundreds of photos from events around the ward as well as new videos.

Also, stay informed with news about Ward One with Jim’s Journal.

We’ve accomplished much in the ward in 10 years. Working together, we have made Ward One a better place to live.

CM Graham's Murals DC in The Washington Post Weekend: Get Out and See Them

.

Freinds I am so deeply pleased to see the program I worked so hard to create and got funded  for the past three years has become such a great success, enhancing our arts and our youth programs. Murals DC was featured in The Washington Post Weekend section. and The Post in encouraging residents and visitors who appreciate the arts and youth to get out and see some this weekend. Thre are more than 20 around town But I am partial to those in Ward 1. Click on the picture to see all of them or the link to read the story.

New Rec. Center Opportunity

Dear Friends:

Last week, the District of Columbia purchased the Mary & Daniel Loughran Clubhouse No. 10 at 14th and Clifton Streets, NW. The Department of Parks and Recreation will soon request proposals from community groups to operate programs there.  In the interim, Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington will manage programs and the facility.

A special appreciation goes to Mayor Fenty and Chairman Gray for their leadership in bringing this about.

I have authored $1 million in funding in two separate years to support programs and capital improvements at No. 10.  Last year, I authored the $750,000 which is being used to keep programs running during the transition period. I also assembled a working group of advocates, the No. 10 Parents Association, Linda Edmundson, Denise Credle, Hanif Hill and others to get $20 million to include No. 10 and Eastern Branch in the city’s purchase of three clubs.

Clubhouse No. 10 has offered recreational and mentoring programs for over 30 years.  Alumni have gone on to play in the NBA and NFL, start businesses and lead very productive lives.  I am pleased this tradition will be continued.  This is a major victory for the Columbia Heights neighborhood and all of Ward One.

Bests,
Councilmember Jim Graham

A Historic Day for Justice and Equality

Today, at All Souls Unitarian Church, history was made. Here I am standing next to my Council colleagues as Mayor Adrian Fenty signs into law Bill 18-482, "The Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009."

With this act all District residents regardless of color, race, creed, religion or sexual orientation will have the right to marry the partner of their choosing, male or female, regardless of their own sex.

It took us many years to get here, but this day finally arrived. And we were extremely priviledged that the Mayor chose to sign the Marriage Equality Bill at All Souls Unitarian at 16th and Harvard Streets in the heart of Ward 1!

Rev Hardies of All Souls played a key role in the victory on marriage equality. So this is very fitting, but more fitting considering the churches history of civil rights advocacy and activism dating back to the 1940s.
